i-Dummies Provide Better Tests for Automakers
Anupam | Dec 22 2006

Automakers usually sacrifice hundreds of their cars while undergoing crash tests to study the impact of an accident on the vehicle as well as the passengers.

Earlier the data collected from the devices was routed to recorders that were of the size of a phone booth and the automakers had to store them in trunks of their cars.

But with the advancement in technology the automakers are now using devices no larger than the size of a cell phone and that is attached to the back of the dummy’s spine. These devices are known as i-Dummies.

The use of i-Dummies has not only simplified the process of a crash test but has also released some space in the car that makes for a cleaner installation of the devices and the dummies in the test car. This new technology eliminates the umbilical cords and allows data to be quickly switched from one dummy to another, which in turn speeds up the whole process.

Along with the recorders the sensors used for injury evaluation have also got smaller in size. This enables the automakers to scan the more potential injuries in the small yet delicate parts of the human body.

Other advancements that are underway are dummies called Bio-RID that offer a detailed spinal column to help the scientists study whiplash injuries.

With such advancements in the testing of the cars we can say that the cars of tomorrow will be much better and safer than that of today.
