Eco Tech: US Navy to test biofuel in F-18 Super Hornet
Anupam | Aug 19 2009

Eco Factor: Biofuel mixed with petro-fuel to be used to power F-18 Super Hornet.

The US Navy has escalated its efforts to green its fighter jets, with a proposal for about 40,000 gallons of JP-5 aviation biofuel being issued. The fuel won’t be based on food crops and will be harnessed from Jatropha, camelina or algae depending on the company who will be awarded the contract.

The biofuel will be used in a 50-50 mixture with petroleum-based jet fuel. Ground tests on the engine will take place at a GE facility later this year, which will consume about 18,000 gallons of the fuel, which will be followed by the flight tests that will cover at least 15,000 miles of air time.
