Eco Tech: Kyocera to provide solar panels for Toyota Prius
Anupam | May 20 2009

Eco Factor: Toyota’s solar ventilation system to be powered by Kyocera’s solar modules.

Kyocera Corporation has announced that the company is producing multi-crystalline silicon solar cells for the world’s best-known eco-car, the Toyota Prius. The hybrid car will feature roof-mounted solar modules, which will power the car’s ventilation system even when the car is parked.

The system ventilates the air inside the car by using the electricity generated by the solar module on the rooftop to drive the fans while the car is parked during daytime. This feature automatically moderates the temperatures inside the vehicle during hot seasons to ensure that getting inside the parked car on a hot summer afternoon doesn’t bake the driver.

The product has been developed after strict quality control evaluations, done through rigorous testing to confirm heat resistance, vibration resistance, shock resistance and other aspects, in order to ensure that the quality meets the standards required for onboard components used on the new Prius.
