Eco Tech: Hickam Air Force base gets solar power for hydrogen plant
Anupam | May 21 2009

Eco Factor: Air Force’s hydrogen generating plant powered by solar energy.

Hydrogen is by all means a green fuel and a better alternative than other fossil fuels which are in use today. Making hydrogen generation a green process, Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii (AFHS) has installed a solar array capable of generating 146 kilowatts of energy per hour, which is sufficient to power 30 standard homes. All that energy is used by the hydrogen station installed at the Air Force base.

The $1.5 million hydrogen station was completed in November 2006, and its output has been made renewable, courtesy the $1.1 million solar array. The officials state that before cranking the system to full power, they’ll slowly ramp it to 25% working power to 50% and then higher levels. If all goes according to plan, the system should be able to generate peak output in the next couple of days.
