Eco Tech: Carbon Sciences files patent for breakthrough CO2-to-fuel technology
Anupam | Oct 9 2009

Eco Factor: Nano-scale CO2-to-fuel reactor developed by Carbon Sciences.

The developers of the breakthrough technology that can solve the energy crisis by recycling CO2 from the atmosphere into gasoline and other portable fuels, Carbon Sciences, has announced that the company has filed a patent application for a highly-efficient nano-scale CO2-to-fuel reactor.

The company has incorporated two of the most critical systems required for the process to work, including a low energy enzyme based biocatalytic process and a proprietary enzyme encapsulation technology that increases the life of key enzymes to reduce the cost of fuel production, into a self-contained nano-scale CO2-to-Fuel reactor optimized for the efficient transformation of CO2 and H20 molecules into hydrocarbon molecules that are identical to today’s transportation fuels.

Dubbed Smart Particles™, these reactors are the key to achieving a fast reaction time and industrial scale up of the company’s CO2-to-Fuel process. The design of Smart Particles is inspired by the way single-cell organisms work. A Smart Particle is based on the concept of synthetic biology and functions like a highly efficient artificial cell that contains proprietary enzyme processes to serve a single purpose – to absorb CO2 molecules and excrete fuel molecules.
