Eco Factor: Boats and rafts made from found objects.
In one of the most unique races ever organized, 30 rafts and boats made from recycled materials raced each other in the Festival City marina in an event known as “Whatever Floats Your Boat.” The boats and rafts were made from discarded plastic bottles, cans and paper, with an aim to protect the critically endangered Hawksbill turtles.
The use of wood in the boats was kept to a minimum and significance was given to the use of recycled materials that the teams could collect over a two-week brainstorming period. Funds generated by the event will be used to protect Hawksbill turtles, whose natural habitats in the Arabian Gulf are disappearing at a rapid rate.
